Monthly Slide/Digital Image Competition Categories
September: OPEN
Special:
SUNRISE/SUNSET:
Images that portray sunrise or sunset – other elements may be part of the image,
but the sunrise or sunset shall be the dominant theme of the image.
October: NATURE
Flora or fauna, or heavens,
earth, or seas. No cultivated plants or domesticated animals. No “hand of man”
(meaning no manmade objects are to be visible in the image). The below
definition from NECCC and PSA will be adhered to as the rules for judging our
nature category submissions: “Nature photography is restricted to the use of
the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural
history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well
informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify as
to its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be
weighed more than the pictorial quality. Human elements shall not be present,
except on the rare occasion where those human elements enhance the nature story.
The presence of scientific bands on wild animals is acceptable. Photographs of
artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, or obviously
set arrangements, are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the
truth of the photographic statement. No elements may be moved, cloned, added,
deleted, rearranged or combined. No manipulation or modification is permitted
except resizing, cropping, selective lightening or darkening, and restoration of
original color of the scene. No special effect filters can be applied. Any
sharpening must appear natural.”
November: OPEN
Special: INCLEMENT WEATHER:
Images portraying Inclement weather and the effects thereof shall be the
dominant subject of the image.
December: PORTRAITS
A photographical representation
of a single person, or group of people. The face(s) and its expression of the
person/people should be predominant. The intent is to display the likeness,
personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a
portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person/people in
a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the
photographer (although not necessary), in order to most successfully engage the
subject with the viewer.
January: OPEN
Special: PHOTOJOURNALISM:
Images which tell a story such as would be found in newspapers, magazines, or
the internet. This may include sports, events, or just the story of an
individual or group.
February: LANDSCAPE
An image
representing a scene by land or sea, the chief subject being the general aspect
of nature, such as fields, hills, forests, water. etc.
March: OPEN
Special: STILL LIFE:
Images portraying an arranged still life as the main subject matter.
A Still Life is defined as a work of art depicting inanimate
subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food,
flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases,
jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on) in an artificial setting.
April: MANIPULATED
The
application of image editing techniques to a photographic image in order to
create an illusion or deception (in contrast to mere enhancement or
correction), through analog or digital means. The
image should show an obvious manipulation of the original subject matter.
