Slide/Digital Competition
Simsbury Camera Club

Last Revised 01.01.08

Rules, Procedures and Explanations

The digital competition each month will be an extension of the conventional slide competition. The primary difference is that digital pictures will be submitted as digital files that are projected by a digital projector while the slides are submitted as photographic slides that are projected by a conventional projector.

In any given month, a member may submit a TOTAL of 3 images to that month’s competition (plus 1 additional if there is a Special Category that month.) These may be all slides, all digital images, or a combination of both. Whatever the format, they must conform to the category definition for that month as listed in the slide competition rules.

If you are submitting a mixture of Slides and Digital images, they ARE NOT submitted to the same place.

Slides must be submitted to the slide judging chairman and are due in the CLUB P.O. BOX by the Wednesday preceding the monthly meeting.

Digital images are also due the Wednesday before the monthly meeting, BUT ARE TO BE SUBMITTED AS DESCRIBED BELOW.

Note - The following requirements are in line with the PSA Exhibition Standards and Practices for Electronic Images. These can be viewed at the PSA website by downloading the
“PSA Uniform Practice 2004 Part B - Judging Practice”
at http://www.psa-eid.org/publicat.html

HERE ARE THE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Digital images may be submitted with any amount of adjustment and manipulation that produces images consistent with the subject of the monthly competition. However, all images used, even if combined together, must have begun life as photographic images and must have been taken and worked on solely by the submitter! No cut-and-paste stock images may be used.

2. The actual size of the Digital image must be adjusted so it is no greater than 768 pixels high and 1024 pixels wide for a landscape and 768 wide by 1024 high for a portrait. Image size editing should be done using your digital photo editing software. Adobe Photoshop Elements has been found to work well for pixel editing and file size editing.

3. It must be saved in the JPEG format.

4. The digital image must be renamed using the following template:

Image Name, Photographer Name, (first initial and last name is OK), Competition
Category,
(this would be either “open”, “category name” or “special/name”)
Month and Year of competition
(this may be in numerical format such as 9 06)

Be sure to separate each part by commas.
Do not use lines.

EXAMPLES OF NAMING AN IMAGE:

a. "Moonrise over Grand Canyon_J. Doe_Landscapes_11 05" Not correct. Do not use lines.
b. "Waterfall Patterns, J. Doe, Special Patterns, 10 05"
c. "Balloons, J. Doe, Open, 9 05"

5. Digital images must be submitted using one of the following methods:

-By e-mail, to the club’s digital chairperson.
Currently, this would be Jim Patrina at
simscc@comcast.net
(Must be received by the Wednesday prior to the monthly meeting)

-On CD, at the prior month’s meeting to one of the digital coordinators
(Jim Patrina or Bruce Metzger)
.

-On CD via US Mail, to Jim Patrina, 10 Gretel Lane, Simsbury, CT 06070
(Must be received by the Wednesday prior to the monthly meeting)

JUDGING AND SCORING OF DIGITAL IMAGES:

Points are awarded by judges each month based on the following criteria.
Interest- Does the picture engage your interest, 1-3 points
Composition- Does the pictures have good graphic and color design, 1-3 points
Technique- Is the picture well done technically, 1-3 points
Impact- What is your immediate impression, 1 point

Minimum score per each judge is 5 points. Maximum is 10 points.

1. Slides and digital images will be judged in two separate groups on the same night, by the same judges, using the same criteria. Current procedures for commenting on images may need to be changed if the overall number of submissions becomes very large.

2. A maker’s digital images will be judged in the same class as the one to which that maker belongs in the slide competition.. New competitors will automatically start in Class B. If there are too few competitors at a particular level, then groups may be combined for that particular competition. This would be done at the discretion of the Digital Judging Chairperson.

3. The awarding of ribbons will be decided based on how many people submit in each class. If the number is small only a first and second place ribbon may be awarded. If the number is larger a third and/or an honorable mention may be awarded.

4. Scores will be recorded and published in the Focal Point in a format as consistent as possible with the format used for slides.

5. Winning digital images will be used for submitting to inter-club competitions.

6. Although slides and digital images will be reported separately, at the end of the year, all scores will be combined and averaged to determine high point total and high average awards in each class, and also to determine any class changes which may occur.
